Build One South Africa (BOSA) welcomes the decision by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza MP, to accede to BOSA’s request for an urgent parliamentary debate on the escalating crisis in the Middle East following the recent United States attack on Iran and the implications this has for South Africa.
In her response to BOSA, the Speaker confirmed that, having considered the request, she is of the view that the matter should indeed be considered by the National Assembly under the topic: “The escalating crisis in the Middle East following the recent US attack on Iran and the implications this has on South Africa.” The National Assembly Programme Committee will now be tasked with identifying an appropriate slot for the debate to take place.
BOSA welcomes this decision as an important step toward ensuring that Parliament exercises its oversight responsibility during a moment of significant global instability.
This debate will provide Parliament with the opportunity to interrogate three critical issues.
Firstly, the safety of South African citizens in the region. With flights suspended and tensions intensifying, there is growing concern about South Africans who may be stranded in affected areas. Parliament must ensure that government has clear evacuation plans in place, that consular support is available, and that families are receiving accurate and timely communication.
Secondly, the economic consequences for South Africa. Escalating conflict in the Middle East risks disrupting global energy markets, which could drive up oil and gas prices. This would have direct implications for transport costs, electricity generation, and the broader cost of living for South African households and businesses. Government must outline how it intends to mitigate these potential shocks.
Thirdly, South Africa’s foreign policy position. At a time of heightened global tension, it is essential that South Africa articulates a clear and principled stance grounded in respect for sovereignty and the constitutional values that guide our democracy.
The forthcoming debate will ensure that South Africa’s response to this unfolding crisis is transparent and firmly focused on protecting both our citizens and our national interests. BOSA looks forward to participating in this important debate once the Programme Committee confirms the date.
