Build One South Africa (BOSA) is concerned that the Auditor-General has revoked the City of Cape Town’s clean audit status due to procurement and supply chain management failures.
For years, Cape Town has been presented as the Democratic Alliance’s flagship municipality and proof of its ‘good governance’ model. The loss of clean audit status therefore raises serious questions about leadership, oversight and accountability in the city.
Why are standards slipping?
The Auditor-General’s findings point directly to weaknesses in procurement and supply chain management – areas where rigorous oversight is essential to safeguard public money and maintain public trust.
Cape Town needs leadership that is fully focused on the challenges facing the city. Residents deserve a mayor whose attention is devoted 100% to fixing service delivery challenges, strengthening governance and driving accountability across the administration.
The people of Cape Town face mounting pressures, including rising cost of rent and property, infrastructure demands, traffic congestion and growing concerns around safety. This is not a city that can be governed on a part-time basis.
Good governance requires constant vigilance. The moment leadership takes its eye off the ball, standards begin to slip. The Auditor-General’s findings should serve as a warning that no government, regardless of its reputation, is immune from decline when oversight weakens.
As Cape Town residents prepare to head to the polls on 4 November, they deserve a clear choice about the future direction of their city. The Auditor-General’s findings have demonstrated that even municipalities with strong reputations require renewed leadership, fresh oversight and unwavering accountability.
In the coming days, BOSA will unveil its candidate for Mayor of Cape Town ahead of the upcoming local government elections. Our candidate will present a vision for a city that is governed with full-time leadership, relentless accountability and an uncompromising commitment to clean, effective and responsive government.
Cape Town deserves leadership with both eyes on the ball, focused entirely on the needs of its residents and the future of the city.
