BOSA welcomes fuel levy relief following sustained pressure in Parliament

Build One South Africa (BOSA) welcomes the decision by the Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, to reduce the general fuel levy by R3 for the month of April, in order to mitigate against mounting cost-of-living pressures facing all South Africans.

This outcome follows sustained pressure from BOSA in Parliament. Our Leader, Dr Mmusi Maimane, called for an urgent parliamentary debate to address the direct impact of the escalating US-Iran conflict on South Africans, particularly the risk of oil supply disruptions and the resulting fuel price increases.

BOSA reinforced this position during the Budget Debate, where we called for the suspension of fuel levy increases as an immediate measure to shield households from rising transport costs, which form a significant component of monthly expenses for working families.

Outside of Parliament, BOSA continued to place pressure on government. It was in fact just today that BOSA held a picket outside the National Treasury in Pretoria calling for the fuel levy to be cut.

We therefore welcome the Minister’s decision as a necessary step in the right direction. It demonstrates that sustained parliamentary pressure on behalf of South Africans can yield tangible relief.

However, this must not be a once-off intervention. South Africans require sustained and meaningful relief from persistently high fuel costs. BOSA will continue to push for a comprehensive review of the fuel levy composition, with the aim of reducing the burden on citizens and supporting economic activity.

At a time when global instability is driving uncertainty in energy markets, government must do everything in its power to cushion South Africans from external shocks..

BOSA remains committed to championing practical solutions that ease the cost of living and put money back into the pockets of South Africans.
