BOSA calls on Gauteng Legislature to put people before political deals

Tomorrow, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature is set to vote on the 2025/26 Adjustments Appropriation Bill, legislation that in the main reprioritises budgets across government departments.

Build One South Africa (BOSA) stresses that our support for passing this budget is not an endorsement of government performance. In fact, the need for an adjustment budget exists partly because of poor planning and mismanagement on the part of the ANC-led provincial administration Gauteng residents are right now bearing the consequences of sparse new housing projects, inadequate healthcare, unsafe communities, and underfunded education.

Notwithstanding these shortcomings by government, obstructing the budget for political bargaining is unacceptable. A handful of political parties appear intent on leveraging this process to secure positions in government, committee chair roles, and appointments to public entities. BOSA denounces this conduct in the strongest terms as essential services are at stake.

BOSA calls on all Members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature to put the public interest above the political brinkmanship that is playing out behind closed doors. Passing the adjustments budget is necessary for government to function. Once passed, BOSA will continue its role in holding the executive accountable from the floor of the legislature. Our role as opposition is oversight and ensuring that budgets are implemented responsibly and that every cent is accounted for.

The people of Gauteng deserve governance and leadership. It is time to get on with delivering services and upholding accountability.
