Build One South Africa (BOSA) has formally written to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Thoko Didiza, requesting an urgent debate in Parliament in terms of Rule 130 on the rapidly escalating crisis in the Middle East following the recent US attack on Iran.
The gravity of this situation demands immediate parliamentary oversight and national deliberation.
Firstly, the safety of South African citizens must be prioritised. With flights suspended and tensions intensifying, South Africans remain stranded in an increasingly volatile region. Parliament must urgently interrogate government’s evacuation plans, consular support measures, and communication with affected families to ensure that no South African is left vulnerable.
Secondly, the economic consequences of this conflict will be felt at home. Disruptions to global energy markets are likely to drive up oil and gas prices, placing further strain on transport, electricity generation, and the cost of living. South Africa must be prepared to mitigate inflationary pressures and protect households and businesses from additional hardship.
Thirdly, South Africa must articulate a clear and principled foreign policy position grounded in respect for sovereignty, international law, and constitutional values. Parliament must provide leadership and ensure that government’s stance reflects our democratic commitments and responsibilities in the global community.
This is a matter of urgent national importance. BOSA calls on Parliament to convene without delay to safeguard citizens, protect the economy, and affirm South Africa’s principled role on the world stage.
