Build One South Africa (BOSA) has just learned of a heart-breaking road accident which has claimed the lives of at least 11 school learners near Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng this morning. Learners were being transported to school through scholar transport provided by the Gauteng government.
This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts go out to the families, friends, classmates, and educators affected. No parent should ever have to bury their child, especially after sending them to school expecting them to return home safely.
BOSA MPL Ayanda Allie calls on the Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, to urgently and transparently investigate the circumstances surrounding this accident. The provincial government needs to establish whether the vehicle was roadworthy and legal, whether the driver was properly licensed and whether all scholar transport safety regulations were adhered to.
Parents entrust the state and service providers with the safety of their children every single day and deserve that at the very least. This loss demands urgent intervention to strengthen oversight, enforcement, and standards across the scholar transport system.
