Today marks the official beginning of National Water Month amid a water crisis that is most tangible in the City of Johannesburg. Build One South Africa (BOSA) is proud to announce the launch of our Johannesburg Water Accountability Survey, a targeted initiative aimed to provide relief to residents across Johannesburg.
The survey, which goes live online today, forms part of our commitment to defending South Africans’ constitutional right to sufficient water and documenting the impact of water shedding in the country’s economic hub.
While authorities insist interventions are underway, thousands of households are still navigating daily disruptions that affect their health and livelihoods.
We cannot fix its water crisis through press statements and promises alone. Real solutions require real data. This survey is designed to gather first-hand evidence from residents experiencing water shedding so that BOSA can pursue meaningful accountability through oversight, public pressure, and, where necessary, legal or parliamentary action.
The survey asks residents critical questions, including:
- How long their longest water outage has lasted
- How frequently outages occur in their area
- What aspects of daily life are affected, from hygiene to schooling to running a business
- Whether they have incurred financial costs due to outages
- Whether the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality provides adequate notice or effective response to complaints
- Whether residents believe their basic rights are being violated
All responses are anonymous and will be used to compile evidence-based findings that reflect the true scale and severity of the crisis.
This survey is a critical step in ensuring that the voices of affected communities are heard in oversight forums, decision-making spaces, and accountability processes.
We call on all Johannesburg residents experiencing water shedding to participate and make their voices heard. We can demand urgent action and ensure that those responsible for delivering reliable water services are held to account.
